There is some exciting news on the farm front this year. First off, we are attending the Almonte Farmer’s Market this year on the first Saturday of each month. We will also be there for the opening day on May 18. It is inspiring to be a part of a local producers market and the local food movement. Check out the list of amazing local vendors and then come for a visit! If you would like to pre-order and pick it up at the market, just give us a call or email. It will be cash only since we are a pretty low tech farm at this point.

Secondly, we have added some dairy goats to the farm for our family’s use. They will also be browsing with the sheep to help control woody weeds in our pasture. We are all excited to start milking again and hopefully we can all adjust to goat’s milk after Jersey cow milk.

Our pigs are also going to put put to work this year. They will be grazing and living in the forest instead of the pastures. We are finding it an irritation when they are digging around and rooting up our pasture! Because we don’t want to discourage their natural pig behaviours, we are fencing off an area of cedar bush that is destined to become silvapasture. Hopefully the pigs will root up and discourage a lot of the undergrowth and eventually we can introduce some pasture grasses.

Having 5 kids, we tend to acquire a lot of recreational animals as well. Over the winter we have been joined by Emily, the pot belly pig, Gypsy, the big black horse (breed is a bit of a mystery, the previous owner though Canadian/Percheron) and Trina, the half blind miniature horse.
